SCHNEIDER INVESTS €30 M IN A WOOD FIBER INSULATION BOARD PLANT |
|
|
|
The wood processing plant of Holzwerk Gebr Schneider GmbH based in Eberhardzell, Germany, will be starting construction of a new plant at the company's headquarters in mid-February 2010. The system has been designed to allow both flexible and pressure-resistant wood fiber panels to be produced without any modification or conversion work. The plant is configured to operate with a total annual output of both products of about 250,000 m³. According to the company, the investment will amount to about €30 m, from which approximately €5 m will be spend for the building and other civil cost. Installation of the systems is due to start in May, and the plant is expected to start production in December 2010. Production is to be ramped up in line with demand, with 3-shift working being used. Back in December 2009, Schneider and Dieffenbacher GmbH &CO KG signed a supply contract for the main plant components.
The system will be capable of producing single-layer panels with a thickness range of 20 – 240 mm and densities between 35 and 200 kg/m³. This will be Dieffenbacher’s second insulation board plant following the commissioning of Homatherm GmbH in Berga at the start of April 2009. Given an optimum production sequence, the fiber throughput will be about 7000 kg/h (od). A large amount of the raw material is going to be provided by the wood chips from the company's own saw mill and finishing plant. Furthermore, some roundwood will be used. Heat and energy for the insulation board plant amounting to about 12.5 MW thermal capacity will come from the nearby Bio-Power SKW GmbH, operating on its own premises since 2004.
Schneider is initially intending to market a large proportion of the insulation board production directly through its existing sales network. However, the company is also planning to expand its sales activities. A small share of the production will be value added inhouse on a production line for sandwich elements being installed in parallel to the insulation board plant. This line will glue the wood fiber insulation boards to panel elements at the factory, and these will then be marketed as semifinished products.
Until now, Schneider has predominantly produced structural wood members for modern house building. Its product range includes not only classic structural wood but also KVH (construction solid wood), laminated beams and wooden planking, and even glued ceiling elements. In spite of difficult economic conditions, it was possible to increase sales in 2009 to about €50 m. A total of 160,000 m³ of wood products were produced and sold. The addition of the insulation board production is expected to boost the annual turnover by about €30 m to about €85 m by 2012. The workforce is set to increase from the current 200 to about 250. Schneider is also investing in expanding its solid wood activities. Additional continuous dryers are being installed and the KVH production is currently being expanded with a second production line as well as another sorting line. The investment volume for this is about €3 m.

INDIA
WOOD 2010 TO DRAW AUDIENCE FROM SOUTH ASIA,
SOUTH EAST ASIA & THE GULF |
|
|
|
The 6th edition of
India Wood
is being organized from the 4-8th Of
March 2010 at the Bangalore International
Exhibition Centre, Bangalore.
In a press release, Co-organizers of India wood,
PDA TRADE FAIRS, have indicated Indiawood-2010
the sixth edition of Asia’s most definitive
international exhibition on woodworking,
machinery, tools, fittings, accessories, raw
materials & products will pay special attention
to providing the exhibitors an opportunity to
address buyers from the entire South Asian,
South East Asian & the gulf region.
Mr. Pradeep Devaiah, Chairman &
CEO, PDA TRADE FAIRS is confident, INDIAWOOD is
now more than ever in a unique position to cater
to the requirement of the above markets in
addition to India.
INDIAWOOD had a modest beginning in 1999 as an
educative platform for the INDIAN WOODWORKING
INDUSTRY. Ever since then, it’s broken new
ground edition after edition. INDIAWOOD 1999 had
103 exhibitors from India and overseas. By 2002
with 147 exhibitors from 15 countries & country
pavilions from Germany and Italy, INDIAWOOD had
started catalyzing the Indian
Woodworking
Industries growth by providing a platform that
show cased modern technologies.
By 2004, the event had 223 exhibitors from 22
countries with country pavilions from Germany,
Italy, Spain & Taiwan & INDIAWOOD had arrived to
stay.

By 2006, INDIAWOOD, started attracting audience
from the neighboring countries as well, Srilanka,
Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan started looking to
Indiawood for sourcing their woodworking
technology. INDIAWOOD 2006 was over 18000 sq.

single largest sourcing ground for woodworking
technologies for the entire South ASIAN region.
The event had 343 participants from 26 countries
and country pavilions from Brazil, China,
Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, Taiwan & USA.

Indiawood 2008 was a resounding success, setting
a new benchmark amongst the woodworking industry
events in the whole of Asia. The exhibition was
27000 sqm with over 400 exhibitors and country
pavilions from Brazil, China, Germany, Italy,
Taiwan, Turkey and the USA. The edition
attracted audiences beyond South Asia & drew
visitors from Singapore, Malaysia & Thailand
too.

PDA Trade Fairs, in the press
note reiterate - As the world is going through a
financial crisis, many smaller regional trade
fairs could become untenable due to minimal
internal demand. The automatic choice therefore
for exhibitors would be to look at a successful
trade show that would cater to many regions.
India alone after seeing a growth
rate in excess of 9 per cent for the last 3
years, has held its ground, industry experts
estimate India’s growth rate in the current year
at between 7 and 8 per cent Per Annum. There are
over 40 million households in the mid to upper
affluence level. About 1.6 million households
earn over USD 100,000 and spend USD 9,000 of
this on luxury goods, each year. In light of
these statistics, most International companies
from various sectors and from the wood working
sector would be looking at a strong potential
market such as India to revive their sales and
revenues.
The woodworking industry in India is considered
a sunrise sector and Indiawood has fuelled the
growth of this Industry. Indiawood 2010 will
showcase everything from simple hand saws to the
latest CNC machines. Indiawood will also
showcase the full range of wood processing
technologies, fittings, Raw materials,
accessories & tools from around the world.
Helping to meet the demands of the booming local
furniture manufacturing industries, Indiawood
2010 will, once again, continue to catalyze the
growth of this sector also spawn the growth of
new Industries, thereby creating immense
employment opportunities for skilled wood
workers.
Indiawood, as the most definitive
wood working industry show outside USA and
Europe, now more than ever is in a position to
deliver potential business not only through the
Indian market’s internal requirements but also
from buyers from the rest of the Asian and the
Gulf region.
To be a part of the estimated US$4.4 billion
Indian furniture manufacturing sector and make
new contacts for your business from the rest of
the Asian and Gulf region - Indiawood 2010
promises to be the most definitive platform.
INDIAWOOD 2010 has already sold out over 65% of
the 30,000 Sq Mtrs space, with country pavilions
from Germany, Italy, Taiwan and USA having
already confirmed large spaces for their
respective country pavilions. INDIAWOOD 2010 is
expecting a phenomenal participation from China
too. |

HOLZ-HER REICH Spezialmaschinen GmbH, a leading
manufacturer of edgebanding machines, presents
its new model in the middle class edgebander
range with the designation ARCUS 1330 doors and
ARCUS 1336.
Door Production Made Easy
The ARCUS 1330 doors are the high performance
edgebander for gluing on solid wood edging up to
20 mm and on max. panel thicknesses of 60 mm.
This is the ideal machine for edging and
finishing work on unfinished doors. Optimum
adhesion on thick panels is achieved through use
of PUR glues, which are water-proof and
insensitive to weathering. The solid edging can
be placed in the magazine as a package and fed
automatically to the machine. The high
performance pressure unit presses the edging
cleaning onto the panel material ensuring high
compaction of the glue joint. The subsequent
equipment, primarily the end trimmer followed by
a flush milling unit as well as other finishing
machinery such as a grooving unit, sander or
longitudinal edge radius milling unit, complete
the performance capabilities of the ARCUS 1330
doors.
The
Universal ARCUS
A further model in the middle class, which will
also be present at the LIGNA 2009, is the ARCUS
1336. This model offers an optimum mix, starting
with the jointing cutter unit, gluing station,
end trimmer, flush and longitudinal edge cutters
as well as copy cutter unit, right up to
finishing work with scraper, flat scraper and
buffing units.
The basic machine is equipped with an extending
workpiece support, which supports the workpiece
up to a distance of 690 mm to the run-in stop,
to prevent it from tilting as it is transported
through the machine. The space for the supply
bottles for the spraying device is integrated
into the body of the machine to eliminate
unnecessary attachments on the outside of the
machine. This also been integrated into the
machine. This chip catch box is located at the
end of the edgebander were it can be emptied
easily and is also easily accessible even when a
return unit is installed.
The
newly developed ARCUS series is equipped with
shaping units for machining the ends as well as
machining postforming profiles and is also
available with an optional jointing cutter with
two cutter motors.
Three high performance packages customize the
ARCUS edgebander to be the ideal machine for the
needs of your shop. All
three versions allow processing of workpieces
with thicknesses up to 60 mm and gluing and
post-processing of edging with thickness of 3
mm, 8mm and 15 mm depending on the equipment.
The feed rate is continuously adjustable from
10 - 18 m/min.
The high control standards incorporated into the
ARCUS models makes them future-safe and simple
to operate. The industrial processor makes the
controls extremely high performance and allows
rational set-up and conversion of the machine.
The user surface is similar to Windows showing
all information in graphic form or in clear
text. The pivoting and swivelling control panel
with its dust-proof foil keyboard can be
adjusted to eliminate reflections from
artificial lights or the sun. Comprehensive
programme lists with programme names ensure that
the machine can be set-up quickly
The optimum and shortest workpiece interval is
set by the control and a locking roller on the
machine feed, to ensure high productivity at
maximum feed rate. The control for the ARCUS
series displays service messages in clear text,
so that the operator is always informed of the
machine status.
Naturally applications are integrated such as
individual user management, USB port on board,
keyboard connector on board, optional online
maintenance and barcode interfaces as well as
networking with the HOLZ-HER process data
capture systems for reading out operating data.
Pure Function
The ARCUS series is distinguished by
high variability, higher performance and greater
stability with reduced space requirement. The
modern machine design sets accents with its
large, space-saving guard hoods and minimalistic
functionalism. The required attachments such as
mounts for the cleaning bottles or chip catch
boxes are integrated into the body of the
machine leaving the operator room to concentrate
on his actual work – edgebanding. With their
compact design and variable attachment
capabilities the ARCUS models from HOLZ-HER have
redefined the middle class of edgebanders. The
welded base frame is laid out to achieve maximum
rigidity for the attachments. The transport
chain for the workpieces runs in precision
guides and chain pads provide maximum grip for
securely holding the panels to be processed.
The pressure bridge produced of high
strength, rigid U-channels has a programme
control for motor-driven direct drive adjustment
on the surface hardened steel rod guides. This
ensures smooth transport of the workpiece
through the machine. The large, space-saving and
acoustically insulated guard hoods above the
attachments, with large opening angle,
facilitate adjustment and cleaning work on the
equipment.
In the run-in area the ARCUS models
offer an optional possibility of attaching a
jointing cutter with two motors in the forward
and backward directions to eliminate hairline
fissures in the final layer of the panel
material. Here chip-optimized and
noise-reducing, diamond-coated cutting tools are
used. With the ProLock quick-change unit these
can be changed very quickly.
The edge guide, which can be adjusted
without tools, provides precision guidance for
coiled or cut-length edging, and cuts off the
coiled edging from the coil with a power
guillotine blade. For glue application HOLZ-HER
offers its own patented nozzle application
systems with cartridge or for processing glue in
granule form. This ensures that PVA or PUR glues
can be used without problems. The short heat-up
time of 3.5 minutes ensures users that the
machine is quickly ready for operation saving
unnecessary waiting time. The optional,
pneumatically control pressure unit provides
maximum edge pressure to glue the edges
optimally so that the glued joint is hardly
visible at all.
The post-processing units consist
primarily of standard units with high rigidity.
These are attached a flat milled surface. The
end trimming unit with its two motors ensures
tear-free cutting results for high processing
rates. Surface hardened guides guarantee
long-term cutting precision. The unit can also
be pivoted up to 10° for chamfered cuts.
Heavy duty cutters are used for flush cutting.
These allow processing of edge thicknesses up to
15 mm. Depending on the equipment version the
ARCUS series offers various shaping units for
corner copying and postforming. PVC edges are
trimmed with a scraper unit, available with
optional motor-drive and pneumatic control.
Clean final processing is achieved
with finishing units such as scrapers and
buffing units. A heavy duty grooving unit is
available for cutting longitudinal grooves in
the surface or the ends of the panel. |

THE FOREST
INDUSTRY IN FINLAND DRAMATICALLY REDUCES ITS
DEPENDENCE ON LOGS FROM RUSSIA IN 2008, REPORTS
THE WOOD RESOURCE QUARTERLY |
|
|
|
Finland imported 24 percent fewer
logs from Russia in the 4Q/08 as compared to the
same quarter in 2007. With the uncertainty
surrounding the log export taxes and timber
market conditions in Russia, it is likely that
the Finnish forest industry will rely less on
Russian timber in the future.
Log consumption in Finland was substantially
lower in 2008 than in the previous year. Total
harvests were down about seven percent, with log
deliveries from small private owners 25% lower
than in 2007. Contrary to domestic log
deliveries, log imports increased by three
percent, totaling over 13 million m3 last year.
However, shipments fell dramatically late in
2008, with softwood imports in the 4Q/08 down
24% from the same quarter in 2007 and hardwood
log imports declining 28% over the same time
period. Demand for logs was quite different for
the pulp industry compared to the sawmilling
sector. The total harvest of sawlogs was down an
estimated 22% in 2008 and the decline in the
imports of conifer sawlogs was close to 45%,
with the biggest reduction originating in
Russia. On the other hand, logging of pulpwood
was up by approximately 7% and imports were 24%
higher than in 2007. The biggest increases in
pulpwood imports were of pine and birch logs
from the markets around the Baltic Sea.
Despite the postponement of the Russian log
export taxes for 9-12 months, it is not likely
that Finland will rush back to its Eastern
neighbor and increase log imports again. This is
because many major Finnish companies have
already cut back on their presence in Russia
and/or closed some of their offices. It would be
a big surprise if the log export tax of €50/m3
that was announced by President Putin in 2007 is
actually implemented. There are a number of
reasons for this, which discourages foreign
investors from investing in manufacturing
facilities in Russia, such as:
1) Russia is in need of income from the timber
exports
2) Many Russian logging companies have had to
shut down, resulting in increased unemployment
3) There is not enough domestic capacity to
convert all logs that are now being exported
4) The Russian government’s involvement in
restricting free trade has only created
uncertainty
Despite the reduced operating rates in the
Finnish industry, pulpwood and sawlog costs did
not decrease much in the 4Q (in the local
currency). Because the Euro continued to weaken,
pulpwood prices fell 15% and conifer sawlogs
were down 17% in US dollar terms, according to
the Wood Resource Quarterly.
Global timber market reporting is
included in the 50-page publication Wood
Resource Quarterly. The report, established in
1988 and with readers in over 20 countries,
tracks sawlog and pulpwood prices in most
regions around the world and also includes
regular updates of the latest developments in
international timber, pulp, lumber and biomass
markets. |
