FIMMA-MADERALIA 2011 PROMOTES ITSELF IN INTERNATIONAL MARKETS |
|
|
|
This coming 25 to 28 October Feria Valencia is hosting the joint trade fairs FIMMA (International Fair of Woodworking Machinery) and MADERALIA (International Suppliers Fair for Furniture and Wood Industry). One of the priority mandates of their respective Organising Committees is to raise the fair’s international profile, both as regards exhibitors as well as trade visitors.
FIMMA-MADERALIA’s promotional activities in international markets are basically focused in two directions. First of all, it has centred on the organisation of joint commercial missions. Secondly, and jointly with the Chamber of Commerce of Valencia, it has implemented a new initiative called FIMMA-MADERALIA B2B, a series of business to business meetings between exhibitors at the fairs and trade professionals from the sectors coming from 24 countries worldwide.
Special software designed specifically for this purpose, publicising the main features of the exhibiting companies and their complete range of products, will manage an agenda of meetings to facilitate contacts between complementary business profiles. FIMMA-MADERALIA B2B will be promoted on the Enterprise Europe Network, connecting over 500 business organisations covering the whole of the European Union.
Latin America, North Africa and, of course, Europe—60% of Spanish exports in the industry go to the Euro zone—are the main target markets for this year’s fair.
-New webpage: www.feriavalencia.com/fimmamaderalia-
FIMMA-MADERALIA has just introduced its totally revamped website: www.feriavalencia.com/fimmamaderalia. Here you will find information on the companies which have enrolled as exhibitors and all you need to know to plan you trip to the fairs.
Furthermore, the web also has new sections like Experts Talking where visitors to the web can check out the views and opinions of various leading voices from the wood machinery industry and suppliers to the wood-furniture industry; as well as information on two new events: the Wood Trivia competition and Sustainable FIMMA-MADERALIA.
The Wood Trivia competition gives people the chance to win prizes when presenting curious works in wood, interesting news and trivia, innovative designs and any original object or proposal related with the industrial sectors represented at the fair. Meanwhile, Sustainable FIMMA-MADERALIA features regular tips and ideas on issues related to the environment, recycling and green energy.

EUROBRICO AND MADERALIA GIVE FULL SUPPORT TO
2011 TXEMA ELORZA PRIZE
|
|
|
|
On 10th June coming up the Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences will be hosting the award ceremony for the fifth “Txema Elorza Prize for human and professional values in the ironmongery and DIY industry”. The event is particularly significant for Spain’s DIY (Do It Yourself) sector but is also an important event for the wood processing, carpentry and renovation sector.
To mark this year’s prize the Eurobrico and Maderalia fairs have joined forces to collaborate with the event. The two Feria Valencia exhibitions are thus sponsoring the relationship building session that takes place on Saturday 11th June after the winner of the Prize has been announced.
This distinctly recreational event will see 200 professionals from the world of DIY and ironmongery congregate in Valencia in exceptional surroundings: the Albufera Nature Park. Delegates will have the opportunity to enjoy a boat trip over the Albufera lake and a tasting of typical rice dishes from the area.
The 2010 Txema Elorza Prize was awarded to Luis Franco, EUROBRICO’s president and managing director of Reunión Industrial. This year there were 30 candidates for the accolade, which is awarded each year by the Txema ELorza Foundation, with just three being selected as final contenders for the Prize: sales representative Antonio Cordero; Fernando Leonardo, who is joint owner of Celesa and Bernardo Pons, owner of Metalurgia Pons, Sintes y Petrus.
The Txema Elorza Foundation works to promote social action to improve conditions and quality in the workplace in the ironmongery and DIY industry and also provides support for poor families in the sector. It also promotes and fosters a culture of human and professional values aimed at improving professional performance in the sales, manufacturing and associative environments in the ironmongery and DIY sector that has a direct impact on the service delivered to customers and other professionals. Lastly, it supports development by financing and giving assistance in kind to projects of this nature in countries across Europe, Africa and Ibero-America.
The 35th Maderalia - International Wood and Furniture Industries Suppliers Fair takes place from 25th to 28th October at Feria Valencia. The fair will be showcasing the latest innovations in the field of wood processing, carpentry, ironwork and door security; kitchen and bathroom accessories, lighting, surface finishes etc.
The Eurobrico- International DIY Fair opens its doors next year, 2012, at the Valencia exhibition centre. In between times, alternating on the exhibition calendar with Eurobrico, the 2nd Eurobrico Meeting Point takes place on 6th October next. The event will promote business to business meetings between suppliers in the DIY and ironmongery sector and the main retail multiples.

PRESTIGIOUS FURNITURE MAKERS PRESENT SEMINARS AT AWFS®FAIR |
|
|
|
COMMERCE, CA - 10, 2011 - AWFS®Fair will be offering several skill courses on handcrafted furniture, popular with the independent craftsman and the high-end hobbyist, as well as a practical course on photographing furniture.
Jeff Miller of J. Miller Handcrafted Furniture in Chicago will offer two sessions. In a half-day session entitled, Designing and Building Chairs, he de-mystifies chair construction and joinery for those who may be intimidated by the challenges that chairs pose. Miller, author of numerous books including Chairmaking and Design, has designed over 35 chairs in the last three decades and won numerous awards in museum and juried shows nationally. In Mastering Furniture Design Fundamentals, Jeff approaches design as a skill to be developed similar to other woodworking skills. He will explore each phase and process involved in design from seed idea to finished piece.
Fine Woodworking magazine art director, Michael Pekovich will lead a session on Photographing your Furniture Like a Pro. Having photographed over more than 35 covers for the magazine, Michael will share tips on how to take a great finished shot, including information on composition, background and lighting and how to utilize your own digital camera for the great shots.
Master craftsman, Phil Lowe, founder of the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts will present sessions on Advanced Joinery and Ornamental Inlay. In the Joinery class, Lowe demonstrates complex techniques such as slot dovetails, angled dovetails for drawer construction that isn’t square; angle tenons used in chair construction; and mortise and tenons for curved parts. The Inlay class shows how to embellish furniture with various Federal furniture techniques such as stringing, banding, bellflowers and fans. He also shares how to make simple tools designed for inlay stringing and a process known as sand-shading.
Under the Software & Technology track, but of interest to furniture makers, is a course called, CAD/CNC for the Custom Furniture Maker. Leland Thomasett of Taghkanic Woodworking in New York will explore using CAD/CAM software to design furniture, create fixtures and cut parts. Leland studied with Wendell Castle and participated in gallery shows before starting his company in 1989.
For those at the show whose interests center around furniture, The Furniture Society (TFS) will hold its annual conference in conjunction with the 2011 AWFS Fair. Look for the display of TFS member work in their show floor booth and for on-site activities open to attendees.
The 2011 College of Woodworking Knowledge offers seminars in eight different tracks and involves over 50 industry experts who will deliver presentations to attendees. Sessions range from 1 ½ hours to an all-day training workshop. The full education program will be available in March at www.AWFSfair.org.

WOODMAC CHINA ATTRACTS GLOBAL INTEREST |
|
 |
|
|
|
WoodMac China from 1-4 March 2011 and the 11th edition of this specialist trade fair to take place in Shanghai for manufacturers and traders of woodworking technology, has attracted international support from individual companies and national woodworking associations from Canada, Finland, Germany, Italy, Peru, and Spain. Together with associate shows, FurniTek for hardware and furniture manufacturing accessories and WoodBuild, for wood and wood products, the combined events have attracted over 465 participants, covering an area of 34,000 square metres at Shanghai New International Expo Centre. A unique feature of WoodMac China is the number of international buyers that flock to attend this show. Of the estimated total 14,000 visitors anticipated to attend the four-day fair, some 2,000 international buyers will come from Asia Pacific, Europe, Africa, North and South America.
International manufacturers will target the sale of their technology to Chinese producers of all types of wood products including wood panels, furniture, flooring, door, window, cabinet and staircase factories and contractors for interior and wooden construction. With a critical shortage of skilled labour in the China market at present, much attention will go to those companies offering labour saving machines. Energy saving, recycling and “green” technologies will also be in much demand.
On the other hand, international buyers and visitors to the exhibition will be focused to meet Chinese equipment manufacturers, attracted by their competitive prices and appropriate level technology. A record number of Chinese companies are participating this year from the industry woodworking guilds of Harbin; Qingdao; Shunde; Shanghai and Taiwan Region. Offering plenty of choice for international buyers. International buyer delegations are currently planned from Peru, with 17 delegates and others from Japan, Korea, India, Russia and South East Asia.
The largest international exhibiting group at the show comes from the German Woodworking Association (VDMA). Their pavilion plays host to 21 companies including well-recognized brand names of Altendorf, Benz, Sandvik, Siko, Steinemann, Wemhoner, BMWI and Siempelkamp amongst others. While the Italian Woodworking Association (ACIMALL) will host a pavilion of 14 companies including ANGELO CREMONA, Pozzo, IMEAS, HSD, Giben, IMAL / PAL and more. Besides companies joining national pavilions, a number choose to exhibit independently. Returning and new independent exhibitors include: Union Brother from USA, Raute from Finland, Canada Wood, Holtrop & Jansma Dust Collection and Extraction Technology from Netherlands and Tropical Forest Feria Internacional FENAFOR from Peru. From Asia independents include Arden and Guoming Machinery from Taiwan Region; KMS Woodworking Machinery Accessories Company from Hong Kong SA and Sail Crest Rubber Membrane from Malaysia.
WoodMac and associate shows FurniTek and WoodBuild 2011 will take place in the new halls of Shanghai New International Expo Centre, East Halls 7&6 and North Hall 5. Entrance is via the new East visitor Lobby accessed from Huamu road.
Please visit the show websites www.woodmaccchina.net, www.furnitekchina.net and www.woodbuildchina.net for more information on exhibitors, their products and industry seminars and for visitor pre-registration.

Whether it is for the structures of building or the decoration and arrangement inside and outside, the wood offer all the answers.

He will examine tools and concepts that will help organizations derive excellence and power from customer input while strengthening the sense of partnership that customers feel for your company.
Don Shultz, CEO of Premier Garage and strategist for the woodworking industry, will speak in the opening session of the WIC conference with a thought-provoking presentation on Innovating Your Business Model. Having observed and worked through the paradigm shifts that have occurred in the woodworking industry, Shultz will discuss the need to truly understand the end consumer, the fundamental flaws in old-model marketing strategies and the power behind helping your customers differentiate from their competitors.
NEW in 2011, WIC will feature three industry forums with panelists from leading manufacturers in the areas of cabinetry, furniture, and architectural millwork. They will share their insight as to the current state of their businesses and what they expect moving forward, in a dynamic and interactive exchange of ideas. Most importantly, participants can expect a clearer understanding of how they can better anticipate and react to the needs of their customers, hearing this information directly from the source.
Board members of all sponsoring organizations are excited in their endorsement of the conference.
“This is an important event for us. WIC offers outstanding networking opportunities and allows us to meet with a number of peers and partners for the cost of just a single trip,” David Rothwell, president, WMIA, said.
“Listening to our customers, WIC 2011 has been planned with fewer total conference days, speakers who are directly related to our customers’ needs, and workshops inclusive of customers, distributors, and manufacturers. And there will be more networking time than ever before. You and your company will be rewarded if you join us in 2011,” said AWFS President, Joan Kemp.
“We have a great program for 2011. The customer is key -- forums will feature your customers discussing their needs and outlook; network sessions are face to face sessions with your customers and education sessions help you understand the economic and political climates in which we operate. Having the WIC in a relaxed setting enables everyone to step back from the daily grind and absorb some needed insight. I look forward to seeing everyone there,” said Mark Chappell, WMMA President.

FMC CHINA 2011
Furniture Manufacturing & Supply China
Concurrently with FMC Premium, Furniture China,
September 14-17, 2011, the Expo Theme Pavilion, Shanghai
Woodworking Machinery,
Furniture Components & Raw Materials
750 EXHIBITORS, 59,000 SQM, 32,000 TRADE BUYERS
Move to the Expo Theme Pavilion, Reach a New Level
Furniture Manufacturing & Supply China 2011 (FMC China 2011), concurrently with “Furniture China 2011” held in Shanghai New International Expo Center(SNIEC), will be staged alongside FMC Premium at the Expo Theme Pavilion from September 14-17, 2011. FMC PREMIUM is a show especially designed for high-end manufacturers of furniture raw materials & components.
“FMC China 2011” moved to the Expo Theme Pavilion from SNIEC is an inevitable trend of development. In the past years, FMC and Furniture China squeezed each other in SNIEC. SNIEC could not meet the development needs of FMC & Furniture China Exhibition with a short of nearly 150,000 square meters. If it goes, both two exhibitions will lose competitiveness and be vanished in the market.
After moving, FMC will get 79,000 square meters (the exhibition area of FMC China 2010 was 37,000 square meters), meanwhile, the concurrent exhibition, Furniture China will have nearly 80,000 square meters more. The total area of the two shows will be over 350,000 square meters. Since no space limitation existing, both FMC and Furniture China welcome the rapid development, there will be undoubtedly more furniture exhibitors and trade buyers attracted to the Expo Theme Pavilion. (The exhibitors in Furniture China are the targeted visitors of FMC). As for overseas buyers, they, be sure, would prefer an independent, strong, professional FMC show instead of a trade show with no room to develop mixed in a Furniture Fair.
The Expo Theme Pavilion is the Second largest new modern exhibition hall in Shanghai, 200m away from “Chinese Pavilion” of the Shanghai World Expo, which will bring a huge flow to FMC. Moreover, the Metro Line 7 directly connects the two venues (SNIEC and the Expo Theme Pavilion), it is convenient for visitors to go around. Moving to new venue is an important development phase of FMC, the organizer will invest more on FMC China 2011, making sure all the trade buyers have been well organized and FMC upgraded to a new level.
FMC China 2011 consists of three parts:
I. Woodworking Machinery & tools (Hall 1) 25,000 sqm
The Asian largest column-free exhibition hall, which provides two times larger space than before, has enough room for a delegation of European Woodworking Machinery Association, TWMA, and local woodworking associations
II. FMC PREMIUM (Hall 2) 17,000 m2
Targeting on high-end furniture components and raw materials products. The Hall 2 will make sure of HIGH quality and comfort style of FMC PREMIUM.
III. the general Furniture Raw Materials(Hall 3)17,000 m2
In order to help visitors quickly find their interested furniture raw materials products, this hall will be again classified into several thematic area.
- Furniture Hardware & Fittings
- Office Furniture Supplies & Gas Spring
- Furniture Fabric & Leather
- Upholstery Furniture Components & Supplies
- Furniture Coating, Adhesives & Chemicals
- Furniture Panels & Surface Deco
- Furniture Inspection, Design, engineering & Services
In the 2nd half of 2011, FMC is the only woodworking exhibition in China’s market. Industry professionals will not miss such an important event. It can’t be doubt that they will be sure to go visiting FMC in the Expo Theme Pavilion with SUCH short distance of only 7 metro stations’ taking from SNIEC, after their so long journey to Shanghai.
FMC is not a platform built only by organizer, but also exhibitors, trade buyers. FMC organizer takes efforts to make it more powerful, that will benefit to exhibitors, to the industry. For a people who are prepared, change means opportunity. FMC needs your support and foresight. FMC China 2011, an export oriented, will open a new stage in next September.

NEW BOOTH PACKAGE PRICING OPTIONS FOR THE 2011 AWFS®FAIR |
|
|
|
Exhibitors contracting for the 2011 AWFS®Fair are finding good news – 2011 pricing for onsite labor and booth services have been frozen at the 2009 rates and AWFS is offering, for the first time, new booth square foot package pricing. The packages include material handling as well as options like essential furnishings, carpet, nightly vacuuming, electrical and rigging labor – all at one guaranteed price. Exhibitors also still have the option to order traditional Freeman services through the service kit – at 2009 prices!
These never before negotiated trade show booth package plans – the first in the industry – are being offered for AWFS®Fair in three booth sizes:
• 100 – 400 sq. ft. booths: a package price including material handling plus classic carpet, essential furnishings, nightly vacuuming, electrical & plumbing equipment and labor.
• 401 sq. ft. or larger packages including material handling, carpet, nightly vacuuming, rigging & electrical labor, plus one-time spotting of equipment (includes crane if necessary).
• 401 sq. ft. or larger package option 2 includes all options above minus carpet.
“AWFS and Freeman have worked very hard to come up with the square foot pricing packages which will allow exhibitors to efficiently plan and budget their booths,” explains Marguerite Hoffman, Vice President of Trade Shows, and AWFS. “The packages have been carefully thought out and cover all typical booth essentials.
The beauty of this program is that exhibitors have the ability to choose what is right for them. They can pick a square foot package, or order their services the traditional way – whichever is more cost effective.
“We have had an extremely positive response from exhibitors,” says Hoffman. This program is showing them that we are doing everything we can to increase their ROI.”
AWFS’s exhibit services partner, Freeman partnered with AWFS to present the options.
“For over the last 13 years we’ve partnered with the AWFS®Fair to make the exhibitor experience the most pleasant as possible,” said Dominick Esposito, Vice President, Freeman. “We have and will continue to strive to create and innovative solutions for all exhibitor needs, through economic packages, customer support and strategic planning. We look forward to the 2011 show, the new dynamic packages presented, and our continued vision toward successful exhibiting experiences.”

EUMABOIS SPEAKS FOR SAFETY |
|
|
|
EUMABOIS PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN “Choose the original – choose success” is the slogan of Eumabois’ campaign to defend “original products” against low-cost imitations. The campaign in 2009-2010 will take the form of seven articles highlighting the seven strengths of the sector’s uniqueness - quality, high technology, know-how, reliability, safety, efficiency and experience.
It’s the second year of the communication campaign promoted by Eumabois – the European federation grouping the leading national Associations representing the manufacturers of machines and accessories for woodworking – to safeguard original products. Now more than ever, it is essential to identify the key elements that clearly separate those who pursue research and innovation, developing solutions that create quality, from those who just “follow” with poor imitations. Eumabois is sending out a strong message to industry operators: before you choose a tool, machine, plant or equipment, make sure that it is the result of an industrial process based on a correct sequence of stages, of constant commitment to consistent improvement and knowledge transfer into final products.
In a very complicated economic scenario, the price factor has a very strong appeal, but when the gap is clearly too wide, it is no longer just a matter of competition: you have to think about “what you don’t see”. The Eumabois campaign is casting a spotlight on those apparently intangible values that are actually the foundations of quality production. Seven concepts, seven plusses that distinguish original European technology, values that often cannot be seen, cannot be easily measured.
Before one chooses a production line or even a single bit, a disk blade or a router, one has to analyze it in relation to concepts like quality, hi-tech, know-how, reliability, safety, efficiency and experience. These are the seven keywords of the Eumabois campaign.
SAFETY
This time the focus is on safety, on the increasing commitment to produce equipment, tools, machines and plants that are safe and take into consideration the health of operators.
Woodworking machinery has always been mostly dangerous, also because the workpieces could be handled manually, allowing hazardous proximity between the operator and the moving tool, i.e. the hazardous area. This situation dates far back in time and, to be honest, applies to most production equipment, although accidents have been particularly frequent in the woodworking industry, as shown in the European statistics on industrial accidents.
Safety is one of the most critical factors that must be taken into account when designing any woodworking equipment. For many years now, the laws of all European countries have introduced strict and specific obligations and/or have fixed the essential features and specifications to obtain safety certifications and markings. This action has certainly contributed to a massive and consistent reduction of accidents in furniture factories and joiner workshops.
Another step forward was made in 1995, when all these rules and regulations were combined in a European directive, the Machinery Directive, which was then updated and upgraded in 2009 with the introduction of the 2006/42/EC regulation, coupled with a specific set of standards that provide for clear interpretation and indicate applicable technical solutions to increase the “safety degree” of machinery.
It is worth noticing that this huge “corpus” was created with a significant contribution by European manufacturers, who were involved in the final draft with their tangible experience based on daily work, their skills and the results of research carried out by companies for many years: now, 35 European standards regulate the universe of woodworking machinery, defining and ensuring their compliance with the highest safety levels. Today, safety is no longer a matter of sensitivity of individual entrepreneurs or companies, but rather a set of actions, rules and procedures to be complied with.
The safety culture has taken giant steps and new laws have played an important role, not only because they define clear and precise rules, but because they promote a culture that puts operators, their health and their working conditions in the forefront. Responsible entrepreneurs now have a set of rules that give full dignity to the behavior they have always adopted for the sake of workers and their health. And, at the same time, they can count on tools that prevent those who cannot or will not abide by the law from spoiling the market.
And figures prove it: woodworking technology has been recording a strong reduction of accidents. A new, long-awaited age, for which European manufacturers have worked enthusiastically. A success confirmed by the gradual conversion of European standards into ISO standards, through closer and closer collaboration between the standardization institutes of Europe and the United States, China, Japan and many more non-European countries.
There is still one issue to solve, for which a lot has already been done: all manufacturers now offer training courses for the correct operation of complex machines and plants, and in these courses, safety is always a key topic. It’s been a long and tiring way, requiring constant and significant investments, to increase the safety of technology exponentially without compromising on its potential or productivity. As mentioned, this is the result of design, experimentation and research that are carried on only by those who create technology, not those who copy.

DIFFENBACHER
ON COURSE FOR SUCCESS WITH NEW PRODUCTS |
|
|
Dieffenbacher reported a brilliant 2009 business. Group sales increased by about 10% to €330m. Shareholders' equity grew by €5m with a significant balance sheet profit. "Over the next two fiscal years, we are expecting to achieve similar levels of sales and profits as in 2009," reports the CEO, Wolf-Gerd Dieffenbacher.
The Wood-based panel division has already signed firm contracts for 2010 amounting to more than 100% of its sales goals, and almost 95% of its goal for 2011. €100m worth of orders have already been placed in the first 3 months, resulting in sales that are running well above expectations for this period. As a result, the Group's order book is currently bulging to the tune of €650m, thus guaranteeing full production capacity has been achieved until well into 2011. Among the orders, several MDF lines have been sold to China, while other orders have come from France and Columbia. The highlight is a complete plant to be supplied to IKEA which will be used for producing extremely thin fiberboards for use in lightweight furniture.
Intensive development work continued during the previous financial year, with successes being achieved in many areas especially those having a significant positive ecological impact. These include energy plants in which wood waste is burned, with the resulting heat energy being used to supply the factory.
Lines for manufacturing wood pellets as well as machines for producing wood fiber insulating panels also form part of the future production range. A step in this direction has already been taken resulting in firm orders for these products.
By acquiring the majority holdings in Shanghai Wood Based Panel Machinery Co., Ltd. (SWPM) during the first half of 2009, Dieffenbacher reinforced its leading position in the Chinese market. This measure also underlines the company's strategy of being present with close proximity to customers in the most important markets in the world, not only with sales, production and engineering capacity, but also with service and local spare parts assistance.
SWPM is the best known domestic supplier of machines for the wood panel industry in China, and has been a consistent driver for international expansion during recent years. SWPM commands significant market shares in the area of multi-daylight machines in China. As a result of the acquisition and a recent development of a four-foot wide continuous press Dieffenbacher is now able to offer a competitive solution in this market segment also.
During the 2009 financial year, Dieffenbacher invested additional sums in the training and education of its employees and apprentices. As a result, the company is taking active steps to counteract the forecast skills shortage resulting from demographic change.
Dieffenbacher sees itself as exceptionally positioned for the coming years. "We have outstanding products, and excellent and highly motivated employees. We find ourselves on a firm financial footing, and thus we can look forward to the next few years with great optimism," comments Wolf-Gerd Dieffenbacher, CEO of the group of companies.

SCHNEIDER INVESTS €30 M IN A WOOD FIBER INSULATION BOARD PLANT |
|
|
|
The wood processing plant of Holzwerk Gebr Schneider GmbH based in Eberhardzell, Germany, will be starting construction of a new plant at the company's headquarters in mid-February 2010. The system has been designed to allow both flexible and pressure-resistant wood fiber panels to be produced without any modification or conversion work. The plant is configured to operate with a total annual output of both products of about 250,000 m³. According to the company, the investment will amount to about €30 m, from which approximately €5 m will be spend for the building and other civil cost. Installation of the systems is due to start in May, and the plant is expected to start production in December 2010. Production is to be ramped up in line with demand, with 3-shift working being used. Back in December 2009, Schneider and Dieffenbacher GmbH &CO KG signed a supply contract for the main plant components.
The system will be capable of producing single-layer panels with a thickness range of 20 – 240 mm and densities between 35 and 200 kg/m³. This will be Dieffenbacher’s second insulation board plant following the commissioning of Homatherm GmbH in Berga at the start of April 2009. Given an optimum production sequence, the fiber throughput will be about 7000 kg/h (od). A large amount of the raw material is going to be provided by the wood chips from the company's own saw mill and finishing plant. Furthermore, some roundwood will be used. Heat and energy for the insulation board plant amounting to about 12.5 MW thermal capacity will come from the nearby Bio-Power SKW GmbH, operating on its own premises since 2004.
Schneider is initially intending to market a large proportion of the insulation board production directly through its existing sales network. However, the company is also planning to expand its sales activities. A small share of the production will be value added inhouse on a production line for sandwich elements being installed in parallel to the insulation board plant. This line will glue the wood fiber insulation boards to panel elements at the factory, and these will then be marketed as semifinished products.
Until now, Schneider has predominantly produced structural wood members for modern house building. Its product range includes not only classic structural wood but also KVH (construction solid wood), laminated beams and wooden planking, and even glued ceiling elements. In spite of difficult economic conditions, it was possible to increase sales in 2009 to about €50 m. A total of 160,000 m³ of wood products were produced and sold. The addition of the insulation board production is expected to boost the annual turnover by about €30 m to about €85 m by 2012. The workforce is set to increase from the current 200 to about 250. Schneider is also investing in expanding its solid wood activities. Additional continuous dryers are being installed and the KVH production is currently being expanded with a second production line as well as another sorting line. The investment volume for this is about €3 m.

INDIA
WOOD 2010 TO DRAW AUDIENCE FROM SOUTH ASIA,
SOUTH EAST ASIA & THE GULF |
|
|
|
The 6th edition of
India Wood
is being organized from the 4-8th Of
March 2010 at the Bangalore International
Exhibition Centre, Bangalore.
In a press release, Co-organizers of India wood,
PDA TRADE FAIRS, have indicated Indiawood-2010
the sixth edition of Asia’s most definitive
international exhibition on woodworking,
machinery, tools, fittings, accessories, raw
materials & products will pay special attention
to providing the exhibitors an opportunity to
address buyers from the entire South Asian,
South East Asian & the gulf region.
Mr. Pradeep Devaiah, Chairman &
CEO, PDA TRADE FAIRS is confident, INDIAWOOD is
now more than ever in a unique position to cater
to the requirement of the above markets in
addition to India.
INDIAWOOD had a modest beginning in 1999 as an
educative platform for the INDIAN WOODWORKING
INDUSTRY. Ever since then, it’s broken new
ground edition after edition. INDIAWOOD 1999 had
103 exhibitors from India and overseas. By 2002
with 147 exhibitors from 15 countries & country
pavilions from Germany and Italy, INDIAWOOD had
started catalyzing the Indian
Woodworking
Industries growth by providing a platform that
show cased modern technologies.
By 2004, the event had 223 exhibitors from 22
countries with country pavilions from Germany,
Italy, Spain & Taiwan & INDIAWOOD had arrived to
stay.

By 2006, INDIAWOOD, started attracting audience
from the neighboring countries as well, Srilanka,
Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan started looking to
Indiawood for sourcing their woodworking
technology. INDIAWOOD 2006 was over 18000 sq.
mtrs. of exhibition space to become the new
single largest sourcing ground for woodworking
technologies for the entire South ASIAN region.
The event had 343 participants from 26 countries
and country pavilions from Brazil, China,
Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, Taiwan & USA.

Indiawood 2008 was a resounding success, setting
a new benchmark amongst the woodworking industry
events in the whole of Asia. The exhibition was
27000 sqm with over 400 exhibitors and country
pavilions from Brazil, China, Germany, Italy,
Taiwan, Turkey and the USA. The edition
attracted audiences beyond South Asia & drew
visitors from Singapore, Malaysia & Thailand
too.

PDA Trade Fairs, in the press
note reiterate - As the world is going through a
financial crisis, many smaller regional trade
fairs could become untenable due to minimal
internal demand. The automatic choice therefore
for exhibitors would be to look at a successful
trade show that would cater to many regions.
India alone after seeing a growth
rate in excess of 9 per cent for the last 3
years, has held its ground, industry experts
estimate India’s growth rate in the current year
at between 7 and 8 per cent Per Annum. There are
over 40 million households in the mid to upper
affluence level. About 1.6 million households
earn over USD 100,000 and spend USD 9,000 of
this on luxury goods, each year. In light of
these statistics, most International companies
from various sectors and from the wood working
sector would be looking at a strong potential
market such as India to revive their sales and
revenues.
The woodworking industry in India is considered
a sunrise sector and Indiawood has fuelled the
growth of this Industry. Indiawood 2010 will
showcase everything from simple hand saws to the
latest CNC machines. Indiawood will also
showcase the full range of wood processing
technologies, fittings, Raw materials,
accessories & tools from around the world.
Helping to meet the demands of the booming local
furniture manufacturing industries, Indiawood
2010 will, once again, continue to catalyze the
growth of this sector also spawn the growth of
new Industries, thereby creating immense
employment opportunities for skilled wood
workers.
Indiawood, as the most definitive
wood working industry show outside USA and
Europe, now more than ever is in a position to
deliver potential business not only through the
Indian market’s internal requirements but also

INDIA’S LARGEST
INTERIOR INFRASTRUCTURE COMPANY M/S GREENPLY
INDUSTRIES LTD FORAY’S INTO “MEDIUM DENSITY
FIBRE BOARDS” |
|
|
|
Greenply
Industries Ltd is the only integrated manufacturer in India which provides the
widest range of products for Interior
Infrastructure needs. Greenply – A Leader
in the Plywood, High Pressure Laminates and
Decorative Veneers category accounts for 25% of
the organized Plywood & 15% of the organized
Laminates market in India & continues to be the
brand of choice among commercial and residential
Architects, Builders and Users. Greenply has
grown 40% in the last financial year and has 6
manufacturing facilities across India & exports
its products to more than 25 countries across
the world with presence in foreign markets
through own marketing offices.
Greenply has been awarded
ISO-9001, ISO-14001 and OHSAS 18001
certifications besides holding some of the
international quality standards like NEMA & BS
of United Kingdom.
With tremendous growth in
real estate sector such as residential,
commercial and retail and rise in the disposable
income of the country’s middle class, there is
an anticipated exponential growth in the demand
for interior infrastructure products. Looking at
the large potential ahead in the Indian market
for engineered panel products like Medium
Density Fibre (MDF) boards and particle boards,
Greenply plans to set up India’s largest MDF
plant with a capacity of 1,80,000.00 Cubic
Meters at a cost of Rs.250 crores. This will be
India’s first line incorporating world leader
Dieffenbacher’s state of the art CPS continuous
pressing technology. The line will also
incorporate Metso’s latest generation EVO
refiner, a latest Steinemann Satos 8 head
sanding line (the first in India), and the
unique Lukki 2 dimensional panel storage system
supplied by Dieffenbacher.
The Government’s
restrictions on plywood have also resulted in
the additional growing demand of the panels to
be met by engineered panel products like MDF and
particle boards.
The fact that these
engineered panels have very high utilization of
raw material resources as opposed to plywood,
and considering India’s scarce supply of raw
material, has resulted in the government
strongly promoting the manufacturing of these
products.
Greenply’s MDF plant is
scheduled to commence trial production by end of
Dec’09. Greenply plans to manufacture MDF in the
following range:
Greenply’s project will
also contribute socially by way of creating
demand of agro-forestry timber and in turn
helping farming community. |

HOLZ-HER REICH Spezialmaschinen GmbH, a leading
manufacturer of edgebanding machines, presents
its new model in the middle class edgebander
range with the designation ARCUS 1330 doors and
ARCUS 1336.
Door Production Made Easy
The ARCUS 1330 doors are the high performance
edgebander for gluing on solid wood edging up to
20 mm and on max. panel thicknesses of 60 mm.
This is the ideal machine for edging and
finishing work on unfinished doors. Optimum
adhesion on thick panels is achieved through use
of PUR glues, which are water-proof and
insensitive to weathering. The solid edging can
be placed in the magazine as a package and fed
automatically to the machine. The high
performance pressure unit presses the edging
cleaning onto the panel material ensuring high
compaction of the glue joint. The subsequent
equipment, primarily the end trimmer followed by
a flush milling unit as well as other finishing
machinery such as a grooving unit, sander or
longitudinal edge radius milling unit, complete
the performance capabilities of the ARCUS 1330
doors.
The
Universal ARCUS
A further model in the middle class, which will
also be present at the LIGNA 2009, is the ARCUS
1336. This model offers an optimum mix, starting
with the jointing cutter unit, gluing station,
end trimmer, flush and longitudinal edge cutters
as well as copy cutter unit, right up to
finishing work with scraper, flat scraper and
buffing units.
The basic machine is equipped with an extending
workpiece support, which supports the workpiece
up to a distance of 690 mm to the run-in stop,
to prevent it from tilting as it is transported
through the machine. The space for the supply
bottles for the spraying device is integrated
into the body of the machine to eliminate
unnecessary attachments on the outside of the
machine. This also been integrated into the
machine. This chip catch box is located at the
end of the edgebander were it can be emptied
easily and is also easily accessible even when a
return unit is installed.
The
newly developed ARCUS series is equipped with
shaping units for machining the ends as well as
machining postforming profiles and is also
available with an optional jointing cutter with
two cutter motors.
Three high performance packages customize the
ARCUS edgebander to be the ideal machine for the
needs of your shop. All
three versions allow processing of workpieces
with thicknesses up to 60 mm and gluing and
post-processing of edging with thickness of 3
mm, 8mm and 15 mm depending on the equipment.
The feed rate is continuously adjustable from
10 - 18 m/min.
The high control standards incorporated into the
ARCUS models makes them future-safe and simple
to operate. The industrial processor makes the
controls extremely high performance and allows
rational set-up and conversion of the machine.
The user surface is similar to Windows showing
all information in graphic form or in clear
text. The pivoting and swivelling control panel
with its dust-proof foil keyboard can be
adjusted to eliminate reflections from
artificial lights or the sun. Comprehensive
programme lists with programme names ensure that
the machine can be set-up quickly
The optimum and shortest workpiece interval is
set by the control and a locking roller on the
machine feed, to ensure high productivity at
maximum feed rate. The control for the ARCUS
series displays service messages in clear text,
so that the operator is always informed of the
machine status.
Naturally applications are integrated such as
individual user management, USB port on board,
keyboard connector on board, optional online
maintenance and barcode interfaces as well as
networking with the HOLZ-HER process data
capture systems for reading out operating data.
Pure Function
The ARCUS series is distinguished by
high variability, higher performance and greater
stability with reduced space requirement. The
modern machine design sets accents with its
large, space-saving guard hoods and minimalistic
functionalism. The required attachments such as
mounts for the cleaning bottles or chip catch
boxes are integrated into the body of the
machine leaving the operator room to concentrate
on his actual work – edgebanding. With their
compact design and variable attachment
capabilities the ARCUS models from HOLZ-HER have
redefined the middle class of edgebanders. The
welded base frame is laid out to achieve maximum
rigidity for the attachments. The transport
chain for the workpieces runs in precision
guides and chain pads provide maximum grip for
securely holding the panels to be processed.
The pressure bridge produced of high
strength, rigid U-channels has a programme
control for motor-driven direct drive adjustment
on the surface hardened steel rod guides. This
ensures smooth transport of the workpiece
through the machine. The large, space-saving and
acoustically insulated guard hoods above the
attachments, with large opening angle,
facilitate adjustment and cleaning work on the
equipment.
In the run-in area the ARCUS models
offer an optional possibility of attaching a
jointing cutter with two motors in the forward
and backward directions to eliminate hairline
fissures in the final layer of the panel
material. Here chip-optimized and
noise-reducing, diamond-coated cutting tools are
used. With the ProLock quick-change unit these
can be changed very quickly.
The edge guide, which can be adjusted
without tools, provides precision guidance for
coiled or cut-length edging, and cuts off the
coiled edging from the coil with a power
guillotine blade. For glue application HOLZ-HER
offers its own patented nozzle application
systems with cartridge or for processing glue in
granule form. This ensures that PVA or PUR glues
can be used without problems. The short heat-up
time of 3.5 minutes ensures users that the
machine is quickly ready for operation saving
unnecessary waiting time. The optional,
pneumatically control pressure unit provides
maximum edge pressure to glue the edges
optimally so that the glued joint is hardly
visible at all.
The post-processing units consist
primarily of standard units with high rigidity.
These are attached a flat milled surface. The
end trimming unit with its two motors ensures
tear-free cutting results for high processing
rates. Surface hardened guides guarantee
long-term cutting precision. The unit can also
be pivoted up to 10° for chamfered cuts.
Heavy duty cutters are used for flush cutting.
These allow processing of edge thicknesses up to
15 mm. Depending on the equipment version the
ARCUS series offers various shaping units for
corner copying and postforming. PVC edges are
trimmed with a scraper unit, available with
optional motor-drive and pneumatic control.
Clean final processing is achieved
with finishing units such as scrapers and
buffing units. A heavy duty grooving unit is
available for cutting longitudinal grooves in
the surface or the ends of the panel. |

THE FOREST
INDUSTRY IN FINLAND DRAMATICALLY REDUCES ITS
DEPENDENCE ON LOGS FROM RUSSIA IN 2008, REPORTS
THE WOOD RESOURCE QUARTERLY |
|
|
|
Finland imported 24 percent fewer
logs from Russia in the 4Q/08 as compared to the
same quarter in 2007. With the uncertainty
surrounding the log export taxes and timber
market conditions in Russia, it is likely that
the Finnish forest industry will rely less on
Russian timber in the future.
Log consumption in Finland was substantially
lower in 2008 than in the previous year. Total
harvests were down about seven percent, with log
deliveries from small private owners 25% lower
than in 2007. Contrary to domestic log
deliveries, log imports increased by three
percent, totaling over 13 million m3 last year.
However, shipments fell dramatically late in
2008, with softwood imports in the 4Q/08 down
24% from the same quarter in 2007 and hardwood
log imports declining 28% over the same time
period. Demand for logs was quite different for
the pulp industry compared to the sawmilling
sector. The total harvest of sawlogs was down an
estimated 22% in 2008 and the decline in the
imports of conifer sawlogs was close to 45%,
with the biggest reduction originating in
Russia. On the other hand, logging of pulpwood
was up by approximately 7% and imports were 24%
higher than in 2007. The biggest increases in
pulpwood imports were of pine and birch logs
from the markets around the Baltic Sea.
Despite the postponement of the Russian log
export taxes for 9-12 months, it is not likely
that Finland will rush back to its Eastern
neighbor and increase log imports again. This is
because many major Finnish companies have
already cut back on their presence in Russia
and/or closed some of their offices. It would be
a big surprise if the log export tax of €50/m3
that was announced by President Putin in 2007 is
actually implemented. There are a number of
reasons for this, which discourages foreign
investors from investing in manufacturing
facilities in Russia, such as:
1) Russia is in need of income from the timber
exports
2) Many Russian logging companies have had to
shut down, resulting in increased unemployment
3) There is not enough domestic capacity to
convert all logs that are now being exported
4) The Russian government’s involvement in
restricting free trade has only created
uncertainty
Despite the reduced operating rates in the
Finnish industry, pulpwood and sawlog costs did
not decrease much in the 4Q (in the local
currency). Because the Euro continued to weaken,
pulpwood prices fell 15% and conifer sawlogs
were down 17% in US dollar terms, according to
the Wood Resource Quarterly.
Global timber market reporting is
included in the 50-page publication Wood
Resource Quarterly. The report, established in
1988 and with readers in over 20 countries,
tracks sawlog and pulpwood prices in most
regions around the world and also includes
regular updates of the latest developments in
international timber, pulp, lumber and biomass
markets. |
